Kinja'd!!!

I’ve been keeping a secret: over the past two weeks, I was planning on trading in my RAV4 for something new. Today was the day I was going to say goodbye, but I decided this morning she was here to stay.

I wanted to take advantage of, I hate this term, “unprecedented times,” and move forward with something automotive related. Financing deals are good, so I thought “why not? ” My parents hated the idea of me buying a vehicle when I don’t have a job lined up, which is understandable, but they’re also the type to purchase everything immediately. They financed the house, but even that’s paid off. I’d have the funding to cover the vehicle by October (for other reasons); however, they wouldn’t co-sign or anything if I moved forward now.

As I’ve stated before, the RAV4 is theirs. I call it mine, but they need to be with me whenever it goes because it’s registered to them . They also HATE private party sales, so no sale offers will be on here. I only got offered $5,500 from CarMax. I’ve decided that I really like the model of vehicle I’ve been looking at, and I’ll definitely try to pursue it again in a couple weeks. It’s gonna be the future Under_Score car if it’s still for sale.   Deals should only be getting better from here.

This morning, my parents offered to PAY for the new car outright, but I want the satisfaction of buying something I can truly call mine, from my birthday on the tag to insurance. They’d control payments (defeating the purpose of six-months deferred),  it wouldn’t be mine right now, and the RAV would be gone.   Plus, it seemed too soon to get rid of the RAV4. So, the RAV is here to stay.

Sounds like you made the right call. For most of my life I’ve spent money I don’t yet have; trust me, it’s a fool’s errand. Now I’m looking down the barrel of retirement with no way to afford it.

Glad to hear you are making responsible financial decisions. New cars are always a luxury good and there is no reason to be buying when you don’t have a job. That said, I hope you get a good deal on what you want when the time comes.

I’ ve been similarly impatient, wanting to sell my Cruze to get something more exciting while I don’t need to haul people around. However, even if I sell it for more than I paid for it and buy another outright, I still   don’t have a job to cover any unexpected maintenance;  I’ve had to postpone until I can build up an emergency fund.

I could make it work, but the idea of doing this (even though I have super high credit for my age) still freaks my parents out. I’m a little worried about availability, as vehicles are selling like crazy around here due to the deals.

Also, even though I’m only earning around $150 per month right now, I STILL got approved for financing alone, which is actually scary that they put that much faith in credit score.

Did you have a job before, or are you still in college? I’m about done with school.

If you’re younger and not graduating yet, I’d recommend trying to do something like an  Amazon warehouse. They’re in demand, and young, healthy people like us are the best for those jobs right now.

Well I don’t mention this often but I start college this fall. I appreciate your suggestion and may pursue that in the future, but I’d definitely have to wait for this to be well over with considering my health. I was trying to get an internship as well, but everything is on hold at the moment. I don’t have much job experience so I appreciate all advice. My last job, well, it was so bad only one manager lasted longer than me and I only stayed a summer. I don’t want to have to deal with that level of mismanagement apathetic ownership again.

I’m still finding stuff on LinkedIn. If you want me to share some stuff with you, let me know. I’m bouncing between dealer sales jobs or salaried Fintech sales jobs (I’m a marketing major). I realized it’s actually better to apply now because 1. I’m almost out and 2. If their posting dates are recent, they’d better be hiring now.

Most internships want you to have at least a year of college under your belt, usually two or three if you didn’t have AP’s or dual enrollment. Because I graduated high school in 2017, I didn’t have time to have an internship. I just kept my grocery job instead. Internships, however, will probably start online. My dad already worked from home most of the time, but his company is now keeping him home through May 31. I posted a link to something a friend shared below, but I don’t know what qualifications are needed for it.

Congrats with college!  Do you know where you’re going yet and what you’ll major in?

Thank you! I will check all this out, but there are some pressing concerns right now so it may be a few days before I have time. I have been accepted to Ga Tech for an architecture major (Zell woo hoo! ), but I have to start late summer which is now online regardless of what happens, which should clear up some time for a job and/or internship. I will make sure to look at this more closely, so thank you.

Congrats! One of my friends started in architecture at KSU Marietta, and it was a ton of work. Like you, he had one of those end-of-summer things to get him used to the program. He switched his major to something he’s more passionate about. Zell has been extremely beneficial, as has been finishing in three years.

I saw an offer for a job where you put the ads in the shopping carts at places like Publix. If you want something where you can drive around, too, I can send that to you. Five days ago and no applicants; if I wasn’t about to graduate, I’d probably apply to it for a summer job!

Thank you. I am well aware of the collosal amount of work this major is, which is why I have done a whole lot of making sure I like it.

Kinja'd!!!

I also talked to some architecture majors from all sorts of schools, including KSU, and the 5 year program at Tech will be a doozy.

It might be a day or two before I can look into all of these but I appreciate the input tremendously. Good luck with all your stuff because it is a tough year for people graduating (?).

You’re welcome! My Cobb County School District high school had different “business” tracks people could take, and architecture/engineering was one of them. Said friend was super busy with the final class towards the end of high school. I did the Marketing path, which involved creating a store in the cafeteria.

As for jobs, that’s the good thing about being a Marketing major! If one option collapses and furloughs their current staff, I literally   have hundreds of other choices. Even our local car dealers, some of them, are still hiring. Jim Ellis has a hiring freeze, but some of the other groups still have an interest in sales talent. The thing that stopped me from committing to   one job was that it was over a month before graduating!

Yeah want to keep your options open and that's good that plenty are still hiring. With this state of affairs many graduates will not be able to get a job in their field straight outta college or at least have to wait a minute until their profession opens up again. Good luck to you and thanks for the advice!

Well glad the Rav4 is staying in the family. I’ve been thinking about trading mine in, remember mine is almost the twin of yours with added accesories such as a bull bar on the front and rear chrome bumper bar on the rear. The hard part is as much as I want a Subaru Crosstrek my wife won’t let me trade it in till we can get a house first.

Hope the new car works out for you. I have a friend who has the VW equivalent to the Rav 4 the VW teguan or however they spell it and it has had all sorts of crazy odd issues. My 2012 Rav4 is developing its own old car rattles now, so as soon as I can find a decent Subaru Crosstrek limited I am jumping on it like a frog to a Lilly Pad.
